Moira Forjaz
Moira Forjaz is the author and photographer of the book Muipiti - Ilha de Moçambique (Imprensa Nacional, Lisboa, 1983); photo reporter for the book Black Gold: The Mozambican Miner, Proletarian and Peasant-, by Ruth First (St. Martin's Press, NY / Harvester Press, Brighton, 1983) and co-photographer with Susan Maiselas in Images of a Revolution: mural art in Mozambique, text by Albie Sacks (Zimbabwe Publishing House, Harare, 1983).
Born in Zimbabwe in 1942, graduated in Graphic Arts at Johannesburg School of Arts and Design. After graduating Moira Forjaz worked professionally as a photo journalist in Southern Africa and from 1975 onwards as a photographer and documentary film maker exclusively in Mozambique.
During these years she was privileged to receive her knowledge from great photographers in South Africa, like Jurgen Schadaberg, David Goldblatt and Sam Haskins. She acquired her first influences in documentary film making from film directors Jean Rouch and Jean Luc Godard, and as assistant to Rui Guerra and José Fonseca e Costa in Mozambiqu. With the documentary film Um Dia numa Aldeia wins the first prize at the Leipzig Film Festival 1982.
