José Cabral (b.1952)
'I was born in April 1952 in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo. I started learning photography from my father, who was a technician on the railways and a talented amateur photographer and filmaker. When I was twelve he offered me a small laboratory and a box camera.
I’ve been working as a photographer for 30 years. From 1975 to 1978 I worked in the photographic department of the National Cinema Institute, as a member of its first crew. In 1979 I started working on the daily newspaper Notícias and from 1981 to 1982 worked for the weekly Domingo, that I also helped founding. Then, from 1983 to 1985, I worked in the Ministry of Agriculture as head of the photographic department. From 1986 to 1990 I lectured at CFF.
In 1987 I won a scholarship to travel and study still life photography in Italy. I photographed Milan, and later showed the pictures at an exhibit.
In 1996 a scholarship from the Mid-America Arts Alliance took me on a long study trip to the United States where I gave lectures and presented an exhibition entitled The War of Water, about the water problem in the Inhambane province, in Mozambique. In 1998 Ébano Multimédia published my first book A Guerra da Água / The Water War.
In 1999, in Évora, I exhibited photographs of that city and of Island of Mozambique.
I was invited to participate in the 2006 Photofesta with As Linhas da Minha Mão (The lines of my hand).
Today I try to make a living from photography in Maputo, having two works as a priority: Urban Angels and Taste of You, stories of love and life.'
