Palla's work

Victor Palla [1922-2006]. With a significant body of work both as an architect and a photographer, Victor Palla was also a painter, ceramic artist, graphic designer, publisher, translator, gallery owner, a man of ideas and a promoter of many events. The project and book "Lisboa Cidade Triste e Alegre" (Lisboa: A Sad and Joyful City), that he exhibited and published together with Costa Martins in 1957-1959, was a complete innovation in the world of Portuguese photography. Rediscovered and redistributed in 1982 by António Sena and the Ether association-gallery in Lisbon, the book has gained an international reputation – mainly through "The Photobook”, the history of the photographic book published by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger in 2004 – as one of the most significant publishing events of its time. Despite that success, Victor Palla's photographs remained little known, in particular his more experimental work and the pieces where he combined his preoccupations as an artist with his two other careers as an architect and designer. That experimental path was first attempted at the beginning of the 1950s, and was again revived in several exhibitions that took place throughout the 1980s, particularly in "Objectiva/84" at Festa do Avante (1984) or in "A casa” (The house), a solo presentation held in 2000 at the Gulbenkian Cultural Centre in Paris.
