Solander Box
Daniel Charles Solander (1736-1782), botanist, born in Sweden. He went to England following his tutor Linnaeus advice and became Assistant Librarian and Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum. He joined Captain Cook on his expedition to the Pacific. Fellow of the Royal Society he also acted as Secretary and Librarian to scientist Sir Joseph Banks. The book-form box, considered to be the most satisfactory type of case for prints and manuscripts, was designed by Mr. Solander 200 years before conservators discovered the need for an acid-free environment. Today, the Solander boxes incorporate the latest available archival materials, maintaining the original design and quality of craftsmanship.
There are two models available: The Supreme and The Denbigh.
